Learning and Engagement
Tours
Cinema Tour (60 Minutes Long, £50, capacity 20)
Our cinema tour is a great opportunity to learn more about the rich history of the only gas-lit cinema the country and its impact on our local community. The tour is specifically designed for young audiences and provides special insight into the building’s restored heritage features by a member of the Hyde Park Picture House team.
Projection Room Tour (30 Minutes Long, £50, capacity 10)
Our projection room tour provides a behind the scenes look at the history and tradition of film, from an up-close look at our two 1960s Cinemeccanica projectors and our continued use of 35mm film, right up to modern day projection technology and techniques, delivered by our trained Projection team.
Workshops
Key Stage 1 and 2 workshops (2 Hours Long, £150, capacity 30)
We offer a selection of creative and heritage-based workshops for schools, home educators and community groups to support and enhance learning across a range of subjects including Music, Science, History and Film utilising our heritage venue, film screenings and interactive activities.
Our educational workshops and visits are based at the Hyde Park Picture House but can be potentially adapted for delivery in your school, college, or community spaces. Please contact us to discuss this further.
The Hyde Park Picture House is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network.
KEY STAGE 1 – FOLEY WORKSHOP (Main Focus Music)
Explore how sound is used in cinema, from early silent film to the introduction and importance of sound and music to cinema. The workshop will include experimenting with our own bodies, using props and making your own instrument to create sounds to accompany film.
KEY STAGE 2: SHADOW PUPPETS WORKSHOP (Main Focus Science)
Learn about light and shadow further by exploring and experiencing how film projection works. The workshop includes a screening of an early Lotte Reiniger animation from the 1920s using paper cut-outs, a tour of our projection room, an opportunity to experiment with our very own mini–Hyde Park Picture House Shadow Theatre and the chance to make your own shadow puppets to then project onto our big screen!
KEY STAGE 2: ZOETROPE WORKSHOP (Main Focus History)
Find out more about the history of film and create your own moving images. The workshop includes watching and learning about early examples of film, a tour of our projection room and experimenting with thaumatropes and zoetropes to create your own films on the big screen.
