Synopsis:

Dreamlike, poetic and endlessly inventive, Orphée rightly stands as Cocteau’s most widely celebrated work of cinema. Jean Cocteau’s haunting and visually stunning reimagining of the Orpheus myth marries classical legend with an equally mythologized version of the filmmaker’s own personal story. Jean Marais plays a famous poet caught between two worlds when, seeking inspiration for his work, he follows a mysterious woman through Cocteau’s famous mirrored portal into the land of the dead.

Part of the Magnum Photos & Masters of Cinema retrospective that also includes: Aparajito, The Gospel According to St Matthew, Stalker, Taste of Cherry, and Zabriskie Point. An exhibition to accompany the retrospective is in the Film Festival Bar at Leeds Town Hall from 1st to 16th November. In addition, you can see Cinema Through the Eye of Magnum and The Magnum Eye as part of LIFF 2017.
