Madeline's Madeline

US, 2018, 93mins, Cert.15

Film description

Josephine Decker’s new feature focuses on a complicated relationship of three female characters – Madeline (Helen Howard), her mother Regina (Miranda July) and stage director Evangeline (Molly Parker, House of Cards).

As Madeline rebels against her mother who seems to ignore her growing need for independence, the mentally ill teenager finds sympathy in her stage tutor Evangeline. Madeline is incredibly talented, and the director becomes obsessed with the student herself – she finally finds an inspiration for the play that came to a stalemate and is ready to provoke conflicts to gain more material.

Bold and challenging, the film creatively implements its fragmented editing and sound to erase the borders between reality and fantasy. It further augments emotionally powerful performance of an outstanding discovery – Helen Howard, whose brilliant debut performance has been highly-lauded and described in the New York Times as “one of the great teen performances in film history.”
