Lara is an incredibly motivated 15-year-old who is set on achieving her dream of becoming a professional dancer. Owing to her stamina and determination she enters a prestigious Belgian dance school and is ready to meet any challenges in store. What makes Lara’s life more complicated is her dissatisfaction with what she sees in the mirror – after all, she wants to see a ballerina, a woman – and in her eyes, only sex reassignment surgery could change that.
Sparking heated debates about its depiction of transgender people and self-harm, Belgian director Lukas Dhont’s debut is based on the true story of Nora Monsecour, whose portrayal in the film by Victor Polster brought him an Un Certain Regard Jury award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
