Synopsis:

From the director of acclaimed Like Father, Like Son and Our Little Sister, comes another tender drama, nominated for the Un Certain Regard Award at last year’s Cannes Festival. Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) is a former novelist now working for a private detective agency. Getting back in touch with his funny spry mother, he starts to think about possible reconciliations with his family, as a powerful storm of the title heads towards the city. By turns funny and melancholy, Koreeda's latest is gorgeously photographed and performed, revealing moments of unanticipated beauty thrown into relief by everyday life.

Critical reaction:
  • Twinklingly funny but also infused with a scruffy melancholy... even long-standing fans of the Japanese filmmaker might be taken aback by the supreme subtlety of his latest, achingly beautiful ode to the quiet complexities of family life. ★★★★
